gerbil, especially thank you for that info. My son is insistent he wants Windows 8, but we can't get a new one so I'll explain to him if it's upgraded it just might not work. We also had an older XP computer, though, and it refused to run it at all though it was a graphics card issue, it specifically said that. I feel awful. It was his birthday present and he can't use it. I haven't been able to get the launch log on here because the WiFi internet signal is so weak where we have the computer sitting that I haven't been able to get it sent to my computer. But I'll take a thumb drive up there and get it that way.
So we're working on getting help today from a friend who runs a homeschool minecraft server. If that doesn't work then it goes back. It might go back anyway, I don't think a 7 year old computer should cost that much. Mine is only a few years old, I bought refurbished for $240. Is this computer from Newegg a good bet? Budget is $150 or less as that's what I spent on the one he has.
The log isn't in the location it's supposed to be. Here's aall it says on the launcher log tab when we open it up:

OK, I mayu be talking ot myself at this point, lol, but he got it running. It was a mod that was causing the problem, some cape from OptiFine. The regular Minecraft version worked fine. Then he redownloaded the OptiFine and it is fine now, too. He says it's running pretty smoothly, though it does take longer to load than he was used to on the laptop. So I guess we'll keep it, though I'm still mad at myself for buying such an old system. Now we just have to make the WiFi reach his room better.
I have a PC I set up for my little brother to play minecraft with the same exact specs, except 2.0Ghz instead of 2.3. The Geforce 6150LE is indeed a total piece of crap but it will run minecraft as long as you use Optifine and lowered settings. Without it, its a laggy mess. Make sure you have the latest version of Java 7 or 8 and latest available drivers and you should be able to play. But most I would recommend getting a low power GPU for 20-40 dollars, assuming you have an open PCIe slot.

To do that you can get another router and connect it to your main router. Disable the DHCP server on the second router. Or, the best thing to do is to just connect the PC directly to the router through Ethernet cables, since it's a Desktop.
So I know you're gtexting a lot of crap about buying it off of ebay. To be completely honest, that's not an AWFUL computer. And you don't need very much ram to run minecraft, if any. If this is an issue with an outdated driver check here http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/references/intel-4-series-chipsets/

yeah i have tried minecraft on some optiplex before and it ran fine. The internal server (singleplayer) struggled to generate chunks though, but it worked fine on remote servers (multiplayer).

I will open it and see, I suspect it very well might not have an empty slot b/c it's the small form factor, but no harm checking.

I was thinking this might be the solution, getting another one. Where the computer is located we can't physically connect it to the router without a huge hassle and expense. I think he may have another cable hookup in his room, but I believe RoadRunner charges if you're using more than one hookup but I'm looking in to it. My wireless adapters are old, so that may be an issue.

I really appreciae this, thank you. I certainly wasn't looking to get the latest or the greatest, and as a fmaily we buy nearly everything used and older. I just didn't plan on quite so old! I think sometimes advice is given from the aspect of a very avid gamer who really does need more RAM and greater specs. He just plays Minecraft. Granted, he gets into the programming side daily, I'd love to get him a new one with better specs, but we can't. Thank you for the link, too.

He's saying they're both laggy, local and servers. Frankly the computer runs everything a little slower than I'd like. So still considering getting a different one. Are any of these better in yoru guys' opinions? I appreciate all your help!

Not really any better than current machine you bought at all. I would save up though if you were to buy another machine. 400 is range for decency as refurbished is not ideal unless you know a technician that ain't gonna screw you over.

Log is fine. Optifine can have issues sometime, but normally that dev group is on top of it quickly. It probably takes longer due to Windows 8 being a hogger of the ram on the machine and likely having to use Page Filing system in order to free enough ram to allocate to the Minecraft process. I have an 2006~ laptop with GMA965 chipset (at time, was X3100 mobile iGPU for intel laptops of that age). It can be optimized, Minecraft, with Optifine enough so that it can get about 20+ FPS. This machine here though should be able to do the same.

Yes, it is a very ripoff for such computer with an OS that is not even designed for such hardware of that age, much less supports such hardware GPU wise. And way to go for linking something COMPLETELY unrelated to the subject here for that machine does not have an Intel G945/G965 chipset.

Correct. This machine will run Minecraft better if the user is playing on a remote server as there is less processing and memory demands.
Thank you guys for being willing to help a mama! I mentioned all this to a friend seeing if they could help us in person with settings and such, her husband is the IT department for a local technology vocational school and he has offered to build us a better system than what I bought for free. Such an amazing blessing. So I can send this one back, eat the $30 it'll cost to ship it, and my son will have a computer that will run his precious Minecraft well! We call it Minecrack around here, it's so addicting. He's also very into making videos and posting them so he wasn't happy thinking his new computer couldn't do all that. Thanks you guys! I will certainly remember to be more careful next time.

Video making is very resource demanding without use of an capture card and external recorder. For future note though, really wouldn't suggest buying electronics from Ebay. However glad you found an IT Tech that will not screw you over, even if they are overly generous. Just ensure you get your money back. Never be afraid to ask, always ask, get as many opinions as you can.
I omitted posting about it last time I posted here, since I wasn't sure if you were considering returning it, and I'm not sure entirely where you sit with doing that still, but in case you go that route...
There is a flood of Dell OptiPlex systems on eBay these days. Most of the PCs are used, off lease business class systems that are being turned around and sold after they were returned from lease. Many of them are older, but the Core 2 era PCs (of which many are) make good baseline systems even today for someone who isn't too demanding. You just need to follow a few things as not every one is the same. I have experience with a few of these systems (one is sitting behind me as a TV PC and another was a birthday gift for my nephew), so here's some advice if you do go the route of returning it and decide eBay is still an option (don't discount all of them because the one you bought was a bit incapable; not all are like that). Just whatever you do, please don't get those $99 Pentium 4 systems you linked to. You literally can't do worse than that.
1. Look for something with a Core 2 Duo (preferably a Wolfdale, which would be a E8x00 or E7x00 model). The AMD Athlon X2/Athlon IIs are a step below this, as are the Pentium Dual-cores. I wouldn't look at anything with a Pentium 4, Pentium D, Celeron, or Sempron. Anything better like the Core i series or newer AMD I'll omit mentioning as you all but likely won't find them in these cheaper systems.
2. You want 4 GB of RAM. 2 GB is just too little. More is better, but not essential.
3. There are three main form factors. One is the mini tower form factor, another is a desktop form factor, and a third is the small form factor. Of the three OptiPlex systems I have experience with, one is of each form factor. I'd avoid the small form factor. If you want something small, the desktop form factor is barely bigger, but doesn't have the issues of all the parts being so cramped and running warm.
4. You'll still probably need a video card. You can grab a low profile one for ~$50 from Newegg and drop it in. The PSUs in these systems will handle them fine.
Lastly, you will probably have to go with Windows 7. Your son may have the understanding that the newer operating systems means it's a newer and/or more capable system, but that's not how it is.
TL;DR version - There are a lot of Dell OptiPlex systems on eBay that are off lease systems being sold cheap. Many are decent, and you can get a Core 2, 4GB, Windows 7 system for cheap (under $100 sometimes), and drop in a $50 video card off eBay and run Minecraft rather well.
I've got an idea! You have problems in Minecraft in PC because you bought it online in eBay. I wonder what problems does he have in his PC bought from eBay.
I was just saying that because it came off of eBay wasn't necessarily why it was causing the issues. It's a risk, like anything I suppose, but it doesn't mean it won't work. Like everything, you have to get what will suffice for the purpose you're getting it for. I have gotten two off of eBay somewhat recently (in the past two years at least) and both work fine for Minecraft (among other things). Both were OptiPlex systems like the OP has gotten (not the exact same though).

I'm not sure if you're trying to say "because it came from eBay, that must be why it's having issues" or something else because you kind of lost me. The OP's issues don't stem from the fact that they got it from eBay, and it's giving false information to suggest that when a solution to the problem is what the OP wants.

This is not what is causing the issues the OP has/had.
Ok. Is Minecraft only a problem?
I'm not sure what you mean.

Why is it having a problem if bought from eBay?
