UGH! It's no longer down for maintainence, but so many people are joining that the authentication crashed again! IT'S FRUSTRATING TO SEE MANY OTHER PLAYERS GET ON WHILE YOU'RE STUCK OFFLINE!

I don't like people. I only like Call of Duty and Minecraft.

Right, Mojang server are down for maintenance. This means that Mojang are working on joining servers faster or other error messages. People on the servers can stay on but people who try to join can't. Some people say delete your .minecraft folder at %appdata%, DO NOT DO THIS, it will delete all your worlds, servers recourse packs and mods. The best thing to do is wait. Mojang obviously don't want you joining for one reason or another, so let them do their business, it won't take more than 24 hours. Play single player for a few hours.

Would be nice if we could host our own authentication servers that sync with official ones. I hate how most games require you to login just to play, all it's doing is encouraging people to pirate games since it's easier than trying to play a legal copy.

Actually accounts are to prevent pirating. Accounts on a dedicated online server that are paid can keep people from using an unlicensed copy.
Custom auth servers would still break if Mojang's were DDoSed, there's no point.
