when i play my unmodded game (either survival or creative) nothing happens when i type "/" or "t". so i dont seem to be able to use commands. on all games i make sure to enable cheats.

this is my current set up

11" 2014 macbook using os x 10.9.2
java 1.6.0_65

i tried googling and i am unsure if i understand the google page results that ive read. have the commands been taken out right now for the current (1.7.10) version of minecraft? and so no one who is using that version is able to use commands? or am i confusing that with mods like single player commands?

also, when i check options -> controls

Open Chat is "T" and

Open Command is "SLASH"

sorry, am i asking in the wrong place?

thanks so much! i would have never gone into multiplayer settings. it also enables me to view the commands.
