My friend and I are putting together our own assortment of mods and we can't seem to get OptiFine running. I originally wanted to get shader packs running, but we can't even get OptiFine up to speed...
The only core mod we have running beforehand is Forge and that's it. As soon as Optifine is added, this is the console error:

Any ideas?
Edit: Forgot to mention that I'm using MultiMC's 'Add Jar Mod' function on the latest version.
Why not get a newer version of Minecraft. Why are you doing this to yourself? There is no way that there is not a mod in 1.7.2 or at least 1.6.4 that does not have majority of what you are trying to do in 1.5.2.
My friend and I have a long list of FML mods (that aren't causing the crash) and several of them have not been updated past 1.5.2. Sure, we can find some replacements, but certain things like PowerCraft, which are massively inclusive mods take 5-6 mods just to fully replace.
Well, we got the mods all to work without OptiFine installed, and I tried installing OptiFine in a completely vanilla 1.5.2. So something is very wrong. I grabbed it directly from optifine.net and it just doesn't work. I tried renaming it from .zip to .jar and that didn't work. I just really don't understand why it's not working to install OptiFine HD U D3 on MC 1.5.2 with Forge. This should be simple as balls and for whatever reason, it just does not want to work. Am I missing some horribly simple step? Should I do something with Optifine manually? (I couldn't find the minecraft.jar to modify it myself) I don't mind if I have to do a bit of manual work, but this is seriously not that complicated and I don't know why it just doesn't want to work.
That does not sound like correct set of instructions you are following. There is no 1.5.2 Optifine with Forge install. Instructions on their forum here say this for 1.5.2:
Windows/Linux Instructions:
1) Locate your minecraft.jar file. On Windows, it's in %APPDATA%/.minecraft/bin
2) Create a backup of minecraft.jar
3) Open minecraft.jar in an archive editor (WinRar/7-Zip/etc) 4) Delete the META-INF folder.
5) Copy (drag and drop) the .class files from the downloaded zip file into the jar file, replacing previous files.
6) Run Minecraft and test!
Just figured it out! I just needed to install Forge after OptiFine. It does work with MultiMC when I just flip the order. For anyone who happens to fun into this problem in the future, I was using OptiFine U D3 and the latest version of Shaders for 1.5.2. I just have a new mod conflict that's unrelated, so I'll do a new thread if I need to.
