Hey Minecraft community, just wanted to ask a question. It may be what's expected of this laptop, but I'm not entirely sure, and I want to use it to it's highest potential when playing MC. So, here goes:
My specs are:
Processor: AMD A10-5750M @ 3.5 GHZ
RAM: 8 GB
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 8970M with 2GB of VRAM
If you need more specifications, here's a link that gives a lot of info on my gaming laptop:
So I've been playing MC now on this gaming laptop for a good while now with around 30-50 FPS on average. Recently though, I've finally figured out the problem to my driver issues, and now I get around 100-120 FPS on average with the default texture pack. With SEUS and a 128x128 texture pack combo, I get around back to 20-40 FPS. The thing is, do you guys think this is correct for my specs? I'm not too much of an expert on gaming PC, so opinions and stuff would really be appreciated. I forced MC to use the better graphics card, have Optifine on, updated the AMD drivers to the latest (14.4), and added java to the list for high performance. Is there any way I can boost the FPS?
My friend has a desktop that can run 200-300 FPS apparently and knows a lot about computer specs, so I'll probably ask him more about it too. I know that desktops can pack a way bigger punch compared to laptops when it comes to FPS.
I just want to make sure that this sounds correct and not out of the ordinary...
Minecraft shaders are developed on, and optimized for, Nvidia GPUs. This does mean they generally underperform on AMD cards. Plus laptop cards are generally weaker then their desktop counterparts.
As to what else can be done (aside from High Performance settings, best to use global). Use Optifine Ultra and turn of all of it's performance boosting options. Lower render distance. Shaders are optimized for working with render distance Normal/8. Also turn off Minecraft's FPS limiter.
Oh, okay. Yeah, this is weird... I turned off shaders and used a 128x128 texture pack with the settings on normal. I only get around 40 FPS with no cap...
Edit: Whoa, okay, now I seem to be getting around 70 FPS, but what could be causing this random fluctuation in FPS range? I don't even have anything else open except one instance of Google Chrome? This just seems random to me.
While Chrome is known to eat up copious amounts of RAM (check the task manager, there'll be at least 10 chrome processes) it should affect Miencraft much on you rig.
It's the same FPS with Chrome closed. Checked earlier today. o.o"
Are you using high performance as your power plan for your laptop?
Yeah! I would've expected a straight 60 FPS from this gaming laptop with MC with the default texture pack, default settings, AND optifine. Btw, I also allocated 2 gigs to MC. This should be enough, right?
2 gigs is enough, my laptop was was 400 usd and can run minecraft with a 64x texture pack max settings (except render distance set to normal) at 100 fps

Sire I inquire as I do with most, but do you mean to gloat? For is it truly such a tire to reply to the host with but a simple QUOTE?
Okay, so I was using Photo Realism 128x128. I switched to JSTR 32x32, but I still hit around the 30 FPS mark...
Global?

Well, wow, what's going on with mine then? :L
I have the FPS setting in video settins on "Unlimited" and java set to "high performance" for catalyst control center.
