Hi, I've been having this very frustrating problem for a very long time now and can't seem to find a solid solution to this issue. Honestly, I feel like I'm the only one with this type of issue after searching around on Google for a great amount of time...

So, here's what's going on: I bought this gaming laptop with hopes that it will run Skyrim and MC with decent FPS. It works very well with Skyrim, but terribly with MC. I have Catalyst Control Center (for AMD graphic cards). On Catalyst, whenever I set java for high performance and my laptop's overall battery plan on "high performance" to get the max FPS possible for MC, I receive a black screen on start up. The odd thing is that I can still click around on the black screen and hear the mouse clicking on the buttons that are usually there on the menu... When I set java on power saver on Catalyst, or power saver on my laptop's battery, MC will start up, but usually with only a mere 15-30 FPS average. This is ridiculous for a gaming laptop MADE FOR GAMING. I don't know how to solve the problem. If you need a log of the start up, I can give it to you, but I really need a lot of help with this! I've tried a lot of things.

My specs are:
Processor: AMD A10-5750M @ 3.5 GHZ
RAM: 8 GB
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 8670M with 2GB of VRAM

Also, I'm running on Windows 8, Minecraft version 1.7.10, forge installed, optifine installed, and SEUS installed. I get 15-30 FPS on average without using shaders, fast setting, and 8 chunks (normal) distance.

Also, it was having this same exact problem when I didn't have any mods installed on it... I'm so confused right now...

I tried using that JVM argument and tried using another version, but neither of them worked... I also tried doing more searches and found one article that was similar to my problem, but it seemed to fall short of a solid solution... this problem is very frustrating for me.

I'm running Catalyst version 13.9 and Driver Packaging Version 9.012-121219a-155845C-MSI.

Okay, so I installed it, but.... I can't open the control panel program now.

I rebooted my pc too, but when I search for the Catalyst program on Windows 8 and click on it, nothing comes up. I'll try running MC to see what happens now.

Yeah, I tried right clicking on the desktop and clicking the Catalyst Configure and Catalyst properties options, but no luck. :/
I set the battery option on my laptop and am able to run MC around straight 60 FPS now, but I don't know what the settings are in the Catalyst program because I can't access it.

Yes, that's the one I downloaded. Would I possibly get more FPS if I could access it and set java to "high performance"? It goes from 30-60 FPS. I'm nost sure if that sounds about right for a gaming laptop running MC.

Yeah, then it's too low for Vanilla MC then... I'm doing these FPS tests without using shaders or any high definition resource pack. I'm just using the default texture pack. I'll try to install the Catalyst again will report back.

Okay, so I did a custom install, and the Catalyst Control Center was checked. One thing I do remember was, when I did the first install of the new update, it game me a message saying it had finished installing, but there were warnings. I wish I would've taken a look at them and posted them here. But after doing a second install, it didn't say that, and had a green check mark as if everything had went perfectly fine. I did a reboot, tried all the options for opening the Catalyst, but still couldn't get it to open. There would be a loading thing near the mouse as if it was going to open for a moment, but it would disappear with no new window opening up.
This must be as puzzling to you as it is for me, but are there any other ideas, or advice, you could give me? I appreciate all the help you've given me so far.

Edit: Whoa, that was odd... I tried joining my usual MC server again to see if there were any differences, but the AMD driver gave me a message saying that it had stopped working, but has recovered. MC has stopped responding, I'll restart MC. In single player, I'm observing a noticeable increase in the FPS.

Update: On the server, I get 30-50 FPS, but I know that the strength of the connection to the server also plays a role influencing the FPS of the game, so that could be the reason, but I'm not entirely sure.

Okay, so I uninstalled all the components for AMD and did a fresh install using the custom settings of the latest version that I downloaded earlier. I got a yellow triangle after the install completed saying that there were warnings. I saved the log report. Catalyst still won't open... When I try to open it through the desktop options, I get the "Send information" windows, meaning there was an issue. Do you want me to post the report log for you to look at?

Ah, it's okay, thank you for your help though. No, it's none of those. I have no idea why this is giving me so many issues. I'll probably keep doing some research on this and trying to figure what the issue is. Thanks!

For the sake of people who are having similar issues, this is what I did that worked, do it step by step exactly:


If you run into issues after trying to update your AMD drivers, try a 'clean install'.

"To perform a 'clean install' of AMD graphics drivers:

Note: To be on the safe side, create a system restore point before doing any of this.

1. IMPORTANT: All Windows Updates should be current, including the 'optional/suggested' updates
2. IMPORTANT: Disable all anti-virus/ad blockers/anti-malware/ anti-anything before trying to install
3. IMPORTANT: Netframework is required and must be the latest version. (from Windows Update)

Download the drivers for your computer to the desktop. Follow steps 1-5 (http://support.amd.com/en-us/download ).
Do not use 'auto-detect and install.

Delete existing drivers from your computer:

In computer control panel select 'uninstall a program'
For computers with Intel processors:
Select AMD install manager and choose 'express uninstall all AMD software'
Including the install manager.

For computers with AMD processors:
Select AMD install manager and 'custom uninstall' the graphics drivers and CCC only.

Reboot into 'safe mode'
In safe mode run DDU uninstaller

Reboot

Install the new driver suite.

Reboot"
