Went to Nether via portal in OW for 1st time in a world in 14w25b. No Portal was created in Nether (or it is somewhere very far away).
'spawned' in Nether with head in Netherrack - mined out to save myself, but no portal is near me. Mined around a bit and can't find it (nor hear the portal sounds).
OW coordinates of portal frame -501, 121, 364/363. Nether 'spawn' -61, 121, 45 (about what I'd expect with 1/8 ratio, but no portal).
At Nether 'spawn' point, there is bedrock directly above my head - does that stop proper portal creation? Had thought it would find another suitable spot to create portal if that failed.
Yes, it is a snapshot and comes with issues, but I'm not sure if this is a 1.8/snapshot issue, a known issue, related to the relatively high Y (120), or something else.
Having not brought any Obsidian, I fear the only way to return to OW is to die. I don't want to die. Correct, I do not wish to die.
1) someone encounters similar in 14w25b (or other versions)
2) it really is a bug - Portal obsidian is created but no portal blocks and player is spawned some distance away.
I re-created in 1.7.9 in Creative mode using the same seed (luckily the 1.8/14w25b uses same world creation as 1.7.9). Recreated nether portal at same coordinates: -501, 121, 364/363. This time Nether portal created with functioning portal blocks at ~ -63, 100, 50/51 and player at/in Portal.
Went back to 14w25b world, mined down to that area and Portal blocks (really, just the Obsidian frame) was there, but no portal blocks (i.e. not lit).
Luckily I had flint&steel - lit Portal and was able to get back to OW.
Do not understand why minecraft created un-lit Portal and why player spawn was at -61, 121, 45 while non-working portal was at -63, 100, 50/51.
