So I bought a new Lenovo y50 laptop and installed Minecraft and was expecting to get good performance since it has an Nvidia 860m graphics card and Intell i7 processor with 8gb of ram but the performance is still not that good. I get around 27-30 fps on 10 chunk render distance with fancy gaphics and maximum smooth lighting. If I turn off fancy and smooth lighting the fps goes up very slightly. I have a friend who has a laptop with the same specs as me except he has 10gb of ram and runs the game at 60 fps and above. Is the ram that much more important or am I missing some configuration?

Well, a RAM upgrade won't really make a difference, since you already have 8GB
Try installing Optifine. Makes it much faster. Just download it and click it once.
Turn off fancy graphics/turn down render distance.
If it's a laptop, click on the power icon on the taskbar, click more power options, and click "High performance"
Go into task manager, right click Java(TM) Platform SE binary, click "Go to Details", java.exe should be selected and right click it, click Set Priority>High
