I'm trying to figure out why I keep getting out of memory errors for javaw.
I only have SEUS and OptiFine installed for mods and a 256x256 resource pack. That's it. Sometimes I can play for an hour sometimes it's for five minutes before Windows pops up the message that I'm running out of memory. I look at my process viewer and javaw is using up 2.5 to 3 GB of memory. Is this a normal amount? I don't have the launcher setup to use extra memory, so it's set to the default.
I've got a new gaming rig that I built for myself a couple of months ago and I've got 8GB of memory. I also run a lean system so I have absolutely nothing that loads on startup besides drivers. Here's a screenshot of my resource monitor. Windows Updates are running while I took this so TrustedInstaller and MRT aren't generally running.
Let's say for sake of argument that I typically have 4GB available when I run Minecraft, why would I be getting out of memory popups if java is only using up 2.5GB for MC?
Oh, it's probably also important to mention that I have no page file.
910MB but I've been able to allocate more with the arguments. It doesn't really do anything, though. I've tried upping it to 2GB as well as 3GB but I still get the out of memory errors only they come faster.
Shaders and big resource packs do use up extra memory. And you're using SEUS, THE most demanding shaderpack available. I think that at least shader mod can use up memory not assigned to Minecraft.
I understand that, but to cause out of memory errors on a system with 8GB installed and no other mods? I still think something is wrong. I play a lot of other things and have absolutely no problems.
Do you have/are you using a 64-bit version of Java? If not, try that.
If Windows itself is throwing the error message I think it is, then you may actually be running low on memory (there's a lot of feedback out there about people with plenty of RAM getting that message too though so who knows.). Since you say they come sooner with higher RAM allocation set, and since you disabled the page file, I would imagine it's possible though given the extra stuff you're running with Minecraft. I would start by enabling your page file and see if it still occurs, and then go from there.
Minecraft memory erros look a bit diffrently, so it's not an issue with RAM assignment. The most likely culprit would be shader mod since it can use RAM beyond what's assigned. You might want to post about it in Shader mod thread.
Another thought, maybe this is somehow affecting virtual memory. Have you checked that?
I created a 1GB page file for virtual memory but it hasn't changed anything at all. Memory warning popup at about the same time as it always shows up and java is using the same amount of memory.
