So I've looked around at this on the internet and the first thing that comes up is an old thread from Minecraft Forums from someone who wanted to boost their FPS by allocating more RAM. From what I gathered, if your Minecraft is not lagging, allocating more RAM will not make it lag less. My problem is similar in that Minecraft is not using the RAM that I've allocated to it, but my Minecraft client is actually lagging a ton, and has crashed several times saying "Minecraft has run out of memory," while under the hood, it's not even using 10% of the RAM I allocated to it. Why is this?
So at default RAM allocation (which if I remember correctly is just 1GB, or alt. I can just uncheck the box next to JVM Arguments under "Edit Profile") the game still crashes. Previously I had allocated 12GB of RAM and left 4GB for the rest of my computer, which I'm sure you're going to say is stupid, but I was uneducated, and it worked for a while.
That's the weird part. This didn't start happening until a couple weeks ago. Before that I was able to load into my Minecraft world without the least bit of lag. I got about 10 hours into my world I'd say.

Reset it to default. Unless it crashes at default RAM allocation, allocating more won't help with anything.
