How to I set up a pc controller to play?

I just bought a generic pc controller that resembles an Xbox 360 controller for my daughter to play Minecraft on our pc. I installed the driver and a software program called Pinnacle Game Profiler. I created her Minecraft profile, but the controller will not work for her to play. Can anyone please help me find the right software and help me figure out how to get her controller to function correctly? I am running Windows 7
