Much more information is needed here. Hardware specs, the exact Ubuntu version, a screenshot of the glitchy screen, etc.
If I had to guess, I would say the GPU in the laptop is not using a driver that is fully compatible for that version of Ubuntu.

The screen is a little glitchy (more so than on a 2 year old HP laptop running Windows 7).
Can anything be done about it?
Thanks

Minecraft was installed per http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014/04/install-minecraft-in-ubuntu-14-04/.
When I say "glitchy", I meant the screen is not very fluid when moving.
