This might be the stupidest and noobiest question ever but how does one update Forge without having to re-install a newer version?

Would really appreciate the help from anyone

You can update by putting your 1.6.4 code to 1.7.2
If you want a easy 1.7.2 installl for eclipse get my new build on mcp console, "Forge Console":
