I don't really know how to describe this problem but here I go:
My minecraft has always been pretty laggy. If it gets way too laggy for me to handle I usually just save and quit to get kicked back to the title screen, select singleplayer and reboot my world again. This time, when I went back into my world, the blocks I was trying to break (it was a tree this particular time) kept reappearing as soon as I broke them down. I thought it wasn't a big deal since that's what lag usually does but it's affected everything now. I placed a dirt block down and it didn't make its distinct sound of something being set either. I was able to break that block, but I wasn't able to collect it because it just disappeared. I am freaking out because this isn't the first time this has happened to me.
The first time I encountered this problem was in my old vanilla world, where I encountered an unloaded chunk. I thought the way you fixed that was by jumping into the void, either forcing it to load or killing yourself by falling out of the world. However, I respawned right back into the cavern I was in and was pretty much stuck. No blocks registered what I was doing, and I couldn't escape because even MORE unloaded chunks were blocking my way. I even tried jumping into lava and I wouldn't die. I've never toggled between creative or survival but it felt like I was pretty much in both, since I was unable to kill myself and blocks broke instead of being collected, while I was unable to fly or do anything that creative mode is able to do.
I'm really stuck and don't know what to do. I haven't encountered any unloaded chunks in my new world but that's probably because I quit out of my game as soon as I knew I was having this incredibly laggy problem again. Does anyone know what the heck this might be, and if there's any way of fixing it? With my old world, it happened when I was on and offline, and I'm afraid that might be the case here too, so it can't be internet connection being wonky. My computer is old and has about 17-18 GM left on it, and minecraft usually sucks up 1/2 GM whenever I play. Do you think it's a matter of not having enough memory to run minecraft correctly? Would my world be able to be saved? I've collected a LOT of things and would hate to start from scratch again.
If your world got corrupted you can try to repair it with MCEdit. Open the offending world in MCEdit, press 'ctrl-i' and select 'Repair regions' in the dialogue which pops up. Once this has completed, save your world and exit MCEdit.
To download MCEdit, go to http://www.mcedit.net/ and choose the version appropriate for your OS.

Thanks for trying to help me out! However, is there a version of MCEdit that's compatible with a 10.5.8 Mac OS X? The one I'm able to see is only compatible with a 10.6 Mac and up :c

Afraid not. You could do the repair on a different machine, then move the files.
