So if I join a game and never tab out of Minecraft, the game runs perfectly fine and smooth.
But let us say I get a chat message or whatever and need to open a different window (Chrome, for instance), when I return to Minecraft, my screen gets the white tint and goes non-responsive. I've let it sit like this for an hr to no avail. If I look at what is going on behind the white tint, the game appears to be progressing as usual, everything is still occurring (chat coming in, players running around, etc.) .
I have never seen before an issue like this. Does anyone have any insight?
Edit: Before asked, it is not a RAM issue (I can alt tab in Skyrim with no issue), I have done a re-install of Minecraft (leads me to believe it's a Java issue thus) and have updated drivers.

That appears to have done the trick - thanks a lot, you've been a big help! My apologies for not searching far enough to find that post.
