I'm getting terrible performance and am looking for help/wondering if this is typical.
I recently upgraded from a HD7850 with which I was easily getting into the ~300 FPS range as reported by FRAPS and the in-game debug menu. With the 290x I barely scrape 50 with no mods and the default resource pack. I've removed the old catalyst drivers and reinstalled, but it hasn't helped at all.
In other games I get much more typical performance, it seems to be only Minecraft that has taken a performance hit from the upgrade.
Here are my full specs;
Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit
AMD FX-8350 @ stock 4.0GHz
Sapphire Tri-X OC R9 290x @ stock 1040 MHz
Patriot Pyro 240GB SSD (Boot and some applications, including MC)
Seagate 1TB HDD
8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 @ 1333MHz
MSI 970A-G46 mobo
Thanks a lot, any help at all is greatly appreciated.
I would think that Java is not utilizing the card at all. You may have to force the card to render all Java applications through the Catalyst Control Centre.

How can I do that? I've never really had to mess with CCC before.
I couldn't seem to get the beta drivers to work at all on my system.. black screens immediately after windows loading screen, black screens a minute after loading to desktop, just bad things.. The one time the install didn't lead to black screens, the catalyst control center was missing, and then I got stuck with black screens after rebooting.

Does this keep happening after you remove the R9 290x?

Did you install the beta drivers over the other drivers, or do a full uninstall of drivers before installing the beta ones.
I had an issue installing the beta 14.6 drivers and had to remove the 14.4 ones first, installing the beta ones on top caused a bsod for me

Retired StaffPlease be aware that I do not have an AMD card, this is all by memory.
Right click on the desktop, you should see "Switchable Graphics" as an option. You should then be able to add Java, typically at
Switch that to use the "high performance" card or along the lines of that.
I'm sorry, I can't seem to find that option at all, and it doesn't seem to be anywhere in the Control Center. (I am using 14.4)
EDIT: Looking into the help section of CCC it seems that switchable graphics are primarily a notebook graphics feature..

Retired StaffSorry I could not be of much help, but that is what you need to do. Add java to the list of programs that will utilize your graphics card.
Well, thank you anyway for the response.

I used DDU to wipe the old drivers the second time with the same results.

Yes; hovers around 42 degrees idle, about 50 while playing Minecraft. It usually goes up to 70-75 in GPU-intensive games.
