So my brother and I play together over LAN using my desktop and laptop. The world we play on is obviously a single player world and not a server, and is currently version 1.7.9. However I want to use OptiFine and the latest "non-preview" version is 1.7.4, and I would rather not try the preview 1.7.9 version.
So my question is: Is it OK for me to switch the world from 1.7.9 to 1.7.4? Will I lose anything? Do I just edit the profile in the launcher and everything will be OK?
I noticed most updates after 1.7.4 were for multiplayer so it would not affect me, but I just want to make sure.
Also when 1.8 drops, will I be able to switch from 1.7.4 to 1.8 with no problems? Or would it be better just to try the "preview" version of optifine and keep my world at 1.7.9?

Thanks for any insight you all can provide!
I made my own shader pack, by the way.
