I've been playing Minecraft for about a year with no issues until last week (early June 2014). My internet connection is OK, but may be a factor in the problem.
When I click "play selected world" in the Minecraft menu, it goes through loading, flashes back to the menu, then loads the world. Ground doesn't show up for about 7 seconds, and when it does, it won't save, e.g. I mine blocks of wood from a tree but they reappear and are not added to my inventory. The world experienced a chunk error recently too. Also, when I quit, the Minecraft application with the dirt block icon does not quit but all windows close.
If your world got corrupted you can try to repair it with MCEdit. Open the offending world in MCEdit, press 'ctrl-i' and select 'Repair regions' in the dialogue which pops up. Once this has completed, save your world and exit MCEdit.
To download MCEdit, go to http://www.mcedit.net/ and choose the version appropriate for your OS.
