Ram issues:
First of all, I got -Xmx2g -Xms2g set in java, but in the game its only 496mb ram allocated in the game. I tried using magic launcher to set it and whenever I set 2g or more ram, magic launcher gives me a heap error, which is total BS because I got 16gbs of ram on this PC and should easily be able to allocate 2gbs. I've been having nothing but issues out of magic launcher, so many that in fact I simply quit using it. Crashes frequently.
HD texture pack issues:
I've tried Optifine, MCpatcher, and nothing lets me use a x256 texture pack without crashing minecraft on start up.
I should be able to run whatever mods I want on that rig.
Minecraft version: 1.7.2 (just because it seems like the version that supported the mods I wanted).
Other issues
I also tried the Mod API - Forge, but it gives me an error in the installer when trying to download. This means forge isn't an option unless someone knows where I can manually download the files instead of using their garbage installer. I'd rather manually install mods than try to troubleshoot their installer.
Rage level out of 10 = 5
I never anticipated having this many issues just trying to mod minecraft. If it can go wrong, it has gone wrong, basically.
I assumed in 2 years things would have gotten easier, I used to manually install mods, and they seemed to generally work, but I don't quite remember how, and I'm having issues with the mods such as Magic Launcher, and Forge that are supposed to make things easier, they just aren't working for me. THIS is why I'm mad.
Can someone walk me step, by step which mods I need to get and how I'm supposed to install them? And how do I solve the Java ram issue?
Mods I want:
Rei's Minimap, World edit commands offline, Optifine/optifog, x256 texture pack (something like LB photo realisim), shader mod etc, GLSL shaders. This is all I'm trying to do here, and I need help getting these mods working flawlessly.
If you want to recommend mods will do what I'm looking for, or point out some mods that aren't compatible, please do.
No solution except using technic installer. But the problem is when I move the files over, the mojang installer doesn't recognize them and tries to download them again anyway. Why is this game so frustrating to get running properly? There is no justifiable reason or excuse as to why this F'ing thing shouldn't work.
The only reason I wouldn't use the technic installer permanently is because I can't modify the ram, or other key features.
Is there any way to just get all the minecraft resources without using their failboat installer? Then I just move them into the .minecraft folder and its done? Why can't it just be that simple?
Rage level is up to 6/10 now. I feel like I'm the only person in the world to have this many issues getting minecraft working.
Open your Windows Environment Variables menu and delete JAVA_OPTIONS variable.
OK I'll try that.
The bigger the pack, the more VRAM/RAM it needs. 256x might be too big for a Radeon 7970 and MInecraft cant use more the one GPU so Crossfire setup isn't helping.
Of course this might be also related to your RAM issues. Post any errors/crash reports you might be getting.
Radeon 7970 is overkill for minecraft. I ran a x256 pack on my laptop which has a 580m, which is way worse than a 7970.
Post that Forge error. Most mods require Forge to work.
For 1.7.2 you really need to get Forge working first, What exactly happens when you try running the Forge installer?
I can't remember the exact error, it just stops downloading prematurely. I already deleted forge. So you're telling me there is no other option including just manually installing this stuff? I'd much rather do any other option as long as it freaking works in the end.
This is what is happening any time I try to download anything through Mojang's garbage installer:

Can someone tell me there is an alternative way to download this game? Any way I can get all the resources from somewhere and copy-paste them in?
I found another place to download the game, it works, just magic launcher doesn't work:

Ok, I got regular Minecraft 1.7.2 working with the regular minecraft.exe, and I just installed Forge.
Unfortunately I had to get minecraft from one of the pirate sites (last resort) and copied the files - and yes I do own the game so its not like I actually pirated the game, I just needed help acquiring the files I needed.
Where do I go from here? What do I need to install to run x256 texture packs? I tried mod loader and Optifine last time and the didn't work. Maybe I installed them in the wrong order? I think I installed Optifine first by itself, and it didn't work, and then I tried modloader, also didn't work.
Which load order do I install mods?
Should it be optifine, rei's, world edit? Single player commands mod doesn't look like its been updated. Am I screwed?

Allocated 4GBs of ram to minecraft, and no more crashes. Overkill? Maybe, but overkill is the best kinda kill =P.
