I just recently updated to MC 1.7.9. I can boot the launcher up just fine, access all the menus fine. However, the second I go into multiplayer to join my server and hit play, the game flashes to a black screen and CTD's. Before, I was getting error messages about OpenGL Error Code 7: OpenGL Driver Lost Connection.
Here is what I've tried so far:
-Updated video card drivers.
-Uninstalled and reinstalled video card drivers using a cleaning tool.
-Using an old video card driver.
-Editing the TDR in the registry. I've tried 0, 2, 8, 16, 64, and 128. None of them work.
-Uninstalling Java (as much as possible), and reinstalling it.
-Updated Java to the newest version.
-Took the side off my computer and tie-strapped a box fan to it for additional cooling. Temps at 32-34C.
-Running both with/without the sound enable.
-Running in compatibility mode with Windows XP
-Running as an administrator.
-And I'm sure there's other things I've tried that I've forgotten about.
I never had this problem before 1.7.9. If anyone has any ideas on what to do to fix it, I would appreciate it. Thanks
You might have a firewall issue. What AV software do you have installed? Sometimes AV heuristics will be over-paranoid and kill any app that tries to access the web, which would explain the CTD upon entering multiplayer.

I agree, you really should check your Windows Firewall or AntiVirus.
You guys are awesome. You figured out what I tried to for 3 days. Went into my firewall settings, made an exception for Minecraft.exe, thing runs like a dream. Thanks!
I spoke too soon. It ran fine for about an hour or so. I quit the game, then went back and relaunched it. It's up to the same crashing-as-soon-as-I-hit-play deal. Even on singleplayer. I'm at the end of my rope here. I don't know what could be causing it. Do you guys think it's an nVidia issue?
Well, so far, it has not crashed yet. I set the graphics to only load 6 chunks, and it seems to have more or less fixed it. I'm not sure if that's a nVidia card issue, or a Minecraft issue, because I didn't have this problem before 1.7.9. I used to be able to run 16 chunks at unlimited FPS.
