I've been having a problem with my PC locking up randomly while playing Minecraft. It is not consistent at all. Sometimes it will freeze within a few minutes of logging on, sometimes I can play for 3 hours before it freezes. When it freezes it generally goes to a solid color screen, not always the same color.
PC specs:
Windows 7
i7-2600K
8GB RAM
GTX 570 (Forceware 337.88 drivers)
Java Version 7 Update 60 (both 32-bit and 64-bit)
Things I have tried:
1. Updating Java
2. Fresh install of Minecraft (this happened before on 1.4.7 too and I just did a fresh install of 1.7.9 and it still does it)
3. Updated video drivers
4. Ran Windows memory diagnostic (0 errors)
5. Checked Event Viewer but no error logs are created.
It's not a PC performance issue. CPU stays under 25% usage while playing. Total system memory usage is around 50%. Minecraft never uses more than 35% of it's allocated RAM (F3 menu).
It's not a CPU or GPU temperature issue. The GPU never goes above 19% usage and never more than 4 degrees C above it's normal resting temp.
I can play much more graphics-intensive games for hours at a time without any problems. The system is rock solid stable doing everything else except playing Minecraft. I'm at my wit's end and I'm tired of freezing up at the worst possible times like when I'm underwater and coming back to being dead after I reboot.
Any other ideas that have worked for people who've had crashing issues?
