So I have 12 gb of ram but it will only let me put it too 1 GB. In the Task manager I have 8 GB on stand-by. If the type of ram you need to know its Corsair (don't remember the full name but it was made for gaming).
If you click edit profile on the main launcher, their is an option to change the ram under java settings (advanced)
remember you need 64bit os and 64bit java to be able to apply more then 1.5GB
Also minecraft tends to use the ram it needs, you could offer it 1000GB but it will only use what it needs (around 500MB for vanilla with northing heavy going on) (my figures there maybe incorrect to you get my point)
