I have an install of Minecraft that had not been changed or modded. I can log in but want to add a mod. I do not have minecraft.jar file. I have enabled all hidden files and extensions. I tried to use Magic Launcher and it says missing minecraft.jar and will not log in. How can I get this file back?
Minecraft doesn't have minecraft.Jar in it's files anymore. It's moved, and renamed now. It's usually located in ".Minecraft\versions\VERSIONNAME"
Because of this, some programs or mods may or may not work. Check if they're compatible before doing anything.

This is correct. I found it. Sorry for the hassle. Thanks!
Everytime you start minecraft, the version is checked to see if it is correct. If you modify the version, the launcher will replace it with a new one.
To fix this you have to change the name of the folder, the jar and json files, and the id inside the json file. (i have tried modding this way but it never worked, the jar tries to fix the version and it requests it from the server, but the server gives an error becuse it doesnt exist.)
Look on the internet on how to do this, i may not be correct (i use forge)
I'm running version 1.7.9 on Windows 7.
