As the titled states, my Minecraft runs significantly faster with higher resolution packs? I love default but I am forced to use a pack otherwise I have to deal with 30 FPS. I run 50 with Faithful. Why is it doing this?
This is most likely due to your graphics card and or processor going into power saving mode when, you run minecraft with the original texture pack. The bigger texture pack needs more processing power their for your computer comes out of power saving mode. This is most common in laptops where the graphic card turns it self off and uses the graphic processor on the CPU.
as meshashh has stated it is more then likely to be your gpu, i use a OCed gtx 780 and that gets me 300+ frames on default but once i switch to a 64x64 pack my gpu boosts it self and gets me at least 340fps. now it may not seem like a big jump but if i could get a jump like that in far cry I would be getting high res textures for that game too
You don't need to change your graphics card, you need to change your power settings switch it to "High Performance" on windows, but if you're on a Mac I can't help you.
