Beginner here. My son and I just purchased Minecraft for our MAC computer. Once we setup our account and start to play the game, the game is only giving us an option to create a world in survival mode but no option to create one in creative mode. We have read online that you can download the creative mode but we continue to receive an error message. I fear we have purchased the wrong version…any assistance would be greatly appreciated….I have a 7 yr old here who is itching to play!!! Thank you in advance.

There is nothing you need to download.
Most of the things that look like labels in the world setup screens are in fact buttons. Click on the one that says "Game Mode: Survival" and it will change to "Creative". Likewise, you can use the other ones to change various parameters, use different seeds, etc.
Also, you haven't purchased the wrong version; there is only one for the desktop platform. You've got what you need, you just need to find the proper buttons.
You can just call me Canary.
