Lower your render distance and some other graphical settings.
If that doesn't work, make sure that
* you are not on Peaceful
* the gamerule doMobsSpawn is set to true
* you are not using any Mods that could change it
there is no doMobsSpawn gamerule, at least not on 1.7.5, or 1.7.9
