It doesn't fix this problem, but you can bypass it by running your game as a private server rather than opening the game to LAN. It's not as simple as 'open to LAN' but it will allow you to play with all of your skins and you can log into your own server on the host computer so you don't need a dedicated PC. As long as you don't distribute your IP only those you give it to will be able to log into your game.
I found the video below the easiest to follow:
I haven't worked out how to load a previously created single-player game via the server (it generates a new world when you first start), if anyone knows how please let me know.
There are some computers that cannot support 20 players including themselves. This is simple
1. If the host computer lags because they cannot support themselves, every player that joins makes the server worse, and will crash eventually.
2. Find a friend that can support 20 players plus themself. (Makes it better for you and your friends to play without LAG, if you get lag, and your friend isn't, then its you.
3. Good suggestion
4. Welcome to the Minecraft Forums
OKAY! I just figured it out with snapshot 1.8.1 pre2 playing offline. I'm 90% sure it'll work for LAN, unsure if it'll work with multiplayer servers. It's the swapping of the steve.png file when the minecraft file archive is opened in 7-zip. If you're familiar with the swapping process, delete the file INSTEAD of replacing and then add in the new "steve.png" file after.
If you're unfamiliar with the steve.png swapping:
1. Open ".minecraft" folder. If you don't know where it is (and I'm using Windows 7), go to Start, in the search bar at the bottom type, "run" and then press enter. In the, "Open:" menu type, "%appdata%" , press, "Ok" and then the, ".minecraft" folder should be at the top.
2. Open the, "versions" folder.
3. Open which ever version you want to use's folder
4. Then right-click on the version's Executable Jar File, and then go to the 7-zip drop arrow and click, "Open Archive"
5. Open the, "assets" folder; open the, ".minecraft" folder; open the, "textures" folder; and then open the, "entity" folder.
6. Now if you scroll down pass the folders you'll find a, "steve.png" file. I wasn't able to view the image in 7-zip, but if you copy the image to, say, the desktop, it should show in an image previewer. Anyway, go ahead and save a copy somewhere on your C:\ drive if you want the original Steve skin. OTHERWISE, you're going to delete this, "steve.png" image file and then copy your skin image file into this, "entity" folder SO LONG AS your skin file is named, "steve.png".
7. After you delete the, "steve.png" file from the, "entity" folder, copy your skin .png image file you renamed, "steve" and paste it into the, "entity" folder.
***You cannot leave the original steve.png file and copy and paste your renamed skin file over it. Even if you check the file after just "swapping" the image files, it will show your new skin. But if you go into the game, it'll show as Steve. Furthermore, if you go back to the, "entity" folder, and check the steve.png file, it will be the original Steve again.
And that should do it! Try it out, if all else fails, back up your save files/ resource packs and re-install Minecraft to defaults. I'm going to confirm this with my hubby in a little bit. If it doesn't work I'll delete this post or update it or something.. Let me know if it worked for any of you, too! Thanks, Good Luck, and Happy Gaming! ^. ^
******** UPDATE: The file reverted back to Steve once I connected online. I also noticed it created a 1.8 natives folder in my "versions" folder. Hm... So, I'm only assuming that the above method will only work as long as you don't play online. Once online, the Steve skin is reloaded (I went back to check in the entity folder, and sure enough... -glares-). Soooo close. I haven't tested it offline LAN only, too tired going back and forth. Maybe one day.
CAUTION: We have followed above steps, but the game was never able to work. He could seldom enter the game or it'd be too glitchy. We were using our older router though.
try naming the version from "1.8" to "1.8 Edited"
1. Rename copy everything in the version folder of your choice
2. create a new folder in the versions folder
3. Name it "1.8 Edited"
4. Paste the "1.8.jar" and "1.8.json" file in the "1.8 Edited" folder
5. Rename "1.8.jar" and "1.8.json" to "1.8 Edited.jar" and "1.8 Edited.json"
6. Open "1.8 Edited.json" and find "id": "1.8",
7. change 1.8 to "1.8 Edited"
8. Save it and close (dont edit anything else unless you know what you are doing)
9. Change the version in launcher (if you dont see 1.8 Edited, then you did something wrong)
10. Start the game and enjoy
I keep getting this error, except whoever is hosting is the new alex skin thing, It is really annoying because I have the steve model. It could just be a firewall thing, because recently, it started kicking guest off of the lan world
Okay, I am having the same problem! This is really annoying me... My sister, nephew and I are trying to play Minecraft and we want to also see each other's skin, you know, to make sure everything's okay with it since we made our own custom skins. I tried hosting a LAN server, I could see my own skin and I could see my nephew's and sister's but they can't see mine, I seem to be appearing as Steve. I then asked my sister to host but then she appeared as Steve but could still see my nephew and I as our skins.
I'm pretty sure this is to do with a bug on LAN because on a multiplayer server everyone can see me and I can see the other person perfectly fine. I really hope Mojang are already or going to try fix this because it's like one of the most annoying Mincraft bug ever! [Okay, I'm over exaggerating, LOL]
If anyone knows a solution please do post it, I'm in need of a solution, now kinda?
I'm having the same problem - I can see my custom skin perfectly, but when I'm hosting a LAN-server my friend who I'm playing with can't see it. On her end I'm wearing the Alex-skin.
Really hoping for a solution because it's SO annoying!
It's been about a year already. I feel like there is no excuse as to why this hasn't been fixed yet. Mojang should really get on this and patch it. I always have to be the host in my house, and I don't want to show up as Steve.
Same here, me and my brother have been having the same problem. We're running 1.8.3. When I'm hosting, I can see his skin and mine, but I pop up as Steve for him, he pops up as Alex when hosting. It's getting on our nerves, surely this should of been fixed by now >.>
this has occured since 1.7.5 Update or known as the UUID update or known as Unique User Identification
I figured it out, this is a problem wwith the new skin system revamp, the server will have to downdate to 1.6.4 or earlyerfor skins to work.
this.. this is pretty much whats going on. the skins need to be updated still. get a new skin try a new skin that is updated to the new skins system and see if that worksor edit your own skin and update it yourself im sure you can find a skin editor online siomewhere just open the new project save it as new and reupload it as your skin in minecraft.net
I'm gonna say that this isn't the case. I'm the only person in my group who's updated to the new skin system, but no matter what skins we're using, the host specifically shows up as the default.

not really sure what couldbe causing that hes the host its not like there is a connection problem or internet speed issue there. if hes chose a skin set it on minecraft.net it should show there really isnt a "fix" for it. beside him logging in then out and back in again until it shows

the earth first! we can strip mine the rest of the universe after. click the up arrow if i helped.
This issue happens to my sister HBB and I all the time and I just live with it. An odd thing about it is that if you have the morphing mod installed and the guest morphs into the host, than they can see the host's skin on them but not on the host for some reason. (HBB, the guest, cannot see my skin. However, if she morphs into me she can see my skin, but only on her character. And also, If I morph into another player that is not either of us, than she sees me with that skin... Even if the player posessing the said skin is not online.) I know it's weird.

Sometimes, I like to get on my PC, and check NoahConstrictor9 . tumblr . com. If you happen to like Photoshop art (Sometimes absolute crap, sometimes not), than NoahConstrictor9 is the Tumblr for you. (Please, I only have ten followers, and I've been running the blog for a few months, I need more...)
*Noah is so helpless, that he is advertising his TUMBLR blog of all things, on the Minecraft Forums website.
*Noah is very sorry.
To all of you who copied this and pasted it into a text document or something so you could read it, you fell for my trap! Why not checking out my blog? (Damn I've said that WAY too many times...) Weird fonts are awesome.

Goodbye.
Please can this thread just stop.
It's a known issue, there's a bug for it, nothing else to say about it until it gets fixed.
