Firstly excuse my ignorance if I sound stupid. This is my 1st post ever relating to Minecraft and I'm still trying to get my head around it - for my children's sake as they are the one's that play it!
So we have MC version 1.7.5 and I'm learning how to install mods. That's cool plenty of You Tube videos on how to do it however when I go into my files:
appdata / roaming / .minecraft / versions
I have 3 different version folders which are:
1.7.2 Forge
1.7.4
1.7.5
I'm confused, which folder do I use to install the new mod?
If I have version 1.7.5 do I need the 1.7.4 folder at all??? I assume I need to keep the Forge folder with that being a mod installer right?
After installing Forge I just drop all of the .jar files for my mods into my mods folder (appdata > roaming > .minecraft > mods). You should be able to do this? Honestly, I just can't be bothered to fool with the versions folder.
As for the other versions keeping or deleting them is up to you. I keep mine because I switch between 1.6 and 1.7 quite frequently.
Thanks next silly question though. Most mod files that are downloaded are zip files. Where abouts do I find the .jar file. Do I have to unzip it first or can I just drop the whole thing into the 'mod' folder?

Can someone please explain in dummy terms?
