I have minecraft forge version 1.6.4 for my Windows 8 and I have been following lots of tutorials. None of these help, but I can install .jar files just fine, it's the .zip files that won't work. Can someone help me? Here is a crash report when I tried installing Rei's minimap if it helps:

Umm, pretty sure you can change a file from zip to rar by extracting it, then archiving it as a winrar archive.

When I extract the files and add it as an archive, minecraft forge works well, it just doesn't get recognised.

Right I want your forge version (exact numbers), your list of mods (and version numbers), your java version, your windows version (either 64bit or 32bit, any and all JVM arguements you may have added. Anything you don't know we'll work out

It says on my installer that my forge is 1.6.4-9.11.1.965
I had mods but I delete them all so the only mod I am trying to use is Rei's minimap
I am using Java 7 update 45
I have a 64-bit type of computer
And I don't think I have added any jvm argumentsI notice my java says 32 bit, do I need to change it or something!? Sorry if this is the problem

32bit java isn't a problem until you have mods to warrant an increase in dedicated RAM. Follow what Ace said above and you'll be fine
