My computer is really laggy, and I have used Optifine during the 1.6 and 1.5 updates to decrease lag. I have a Mac running Leopard, in case that information is valuable in any way. I made a new profile for Optifine 1.7.4, but when selecting it and clicking "play," the bar that fills up when Minecraft is loading starts filling up, but then Minecraft simply doesn't load. There are no error messages of any kind. The launcher remains open, but Minecraft doesn't. I installed Optifine by copying and pasting the contents of the Optifine jar file into the jar file of a new Minecraft version in the "versions" folder. I have tried both deleting and leaving in META-INF, with the same result: Minceraft won't open. I have also renamed all files correctly, and edited the text in the json file to match the name of the version.
To the best of my knowledge 1.7.4 and 1.7.2 are compatible and therefor you can still connect to servers using 1.7.2. Have you tried using Optifine on 1.7.2? if so, and the problem persists; there are multiple ways to install Optifine you may try downloading forge and putting optifine in the mods folder, I believe there is an offiacial Optifine installer have you tried either of those?

Right click play and wait for nothing to happen then if you look at the top of the window you will see console click it and have a look at the bottom of that text and tell me what it says
