Is it entirely necessary that you don't install forge? forge is basically used to allow you to more easily install mods while having superior compatibility with other mods (one mod is never enough, trust me). Also the mod you are trying to download has only been updated to game version 1.3.1 (pretty dinosaur, if you ask me) you will need to be running at 1.3.1 for this mod to work. before 1.6.2 installing mods/forge was different and thus will be slightly more difficult. I am not sure what method you used to install it to 1.7.4 but it will most likely be different when doing so for 1.3.1. Overall, your best bet is to get 1.3.1 forge then place this mod in mods folder and such. There are many tutorials online. Best of luck to you, my friend!

I watched the tutorial, I' think I know how to use the method you are using to install a mod to the mc version you will need to play this mod. It's mostly the same except you will need to copy/paste the folder called 1.3.1 in the versions folder instead of the 1.7.4 (if there is no 1.3.1 you can make it by opening the minecraft launcher clicking edit profile then choosing use version 1.3.1 then saving and opening minecraft once) the rest of the steps should be the same. don't blame me if this does not work as they changed mods starting at 1.6 and thus older mods may need to be installed in a different way. if this didn't work than using forge will certainly work though!

Your using minecraft version 1.7.4 that mod is MC version 1.3.2 which hasn't been used for over a year. Its VERY out of date. If you want mods make sure there for 1.6.4. Forge is must if you don't install with forge you will have gray hairs in a week, or less.
ATM a lot of forge mods are still 1.6.4 because mojang changed nearly 500,00o lines of code. Here are some resources hope this helps:
Installing forge 1.6.4 and downgrading in 2mins: then open your MC directory and put the mods in the "mods" folder run the game and have fun.
You may get crashes etc. just post them here using pastebin: http://pastebin.com/ and I'll help any way I can
After months of her bothering me about it, I finally sat down to figure this out. Not easy but we got pretty far by following this video:
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2103696-how-to-install-mods-without-forge-172/
I run Windows 7. Minecraft version 1.7.4.
We installed this mod: http://www.planetminecraft.com/mod/wip-harry-potter-mod-132-modloader/
When we try to load it, it gets stuck on the terrain build.
Please help, our household happiness is at stake and I have reached my limit of knowledge on this.
