OK, I'm posting in this forum because I use a modified 1.6.4 client, but I don't think it matters that much.
My problem is that at times Minecraft gets very slow, this is most prevalent when opening chests, I'll right click, the opening sound will play and everything will freeze for like a second and then I'll be presented with the contents of the chest. Other title entities, like furnaces, are also effected. Optifine seems to help things out
Now I've got a Pentium Dual-Core E6300 @ 2.80 GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM (Windows reports ~3.5 available) and an Intel G41 Express Chipset providing on mother board graphics. OS is Windows 7.
Now my question, can I improve things with just a new graphics card or do I need a new computer to fix this?
A dedicated video card would do you a lot of good as the onboard graphics chip was not designed to run games, just to provide a basic display for internet, and office type tasks. However if you are still using an Intel Core2 Duo (which is what your processor is, not pentium) then you really should take that computer and see how far you can launch it with a trebuchet. That chip is 8 years old and is barely capable of running a Java Applet of Minecraft's magnitude. For about $500 you could get a newwer Haswell i3 processor with a budget end video card that should solve all of your issues.

I best of luck to you,
