I would post this in the unmodded section, since it's technically not a mod issue, but I do have a multitude of mods installed that might be causing this issue.
I'm noticing a significant drop in FPS when I get close to a sugar cane farm, approximately 3 chunks in size. The framerate drop also existed when I got near a 4-chunk wheat farm as well. My guess is that there's a massive amount of calculations going on, but I thought my computer's processor would be able to handle it.
Running Minecraft VSynced at 60 fps, coming within proximity of a farm reduces FPS to ~20 or lower. Settings at maximum, reducing quality does not seem to affect farm framerate drops.

My (hopefully) relevant specs are as follows:
AMD R9 270
Intel i5-4670K @ 3.40 GHz (4 CPU)
8gb RAM (using 4 gb for Minecraft)

The only result I got with Optifine was a constant framerate of roughly 40 (in a freshly generated world), so using it is out of the question.
Any ideas? Is there a way to optimize Minecraft, or am I reaching the peak of my processor's ability? I appreciate any suggestions.
