My laptop is not a gaming laptop, so if I try to play video games on it, it's a nightmare. A friend had recommended Optifine back before 1.6, so I tried it, and found that it made the game playable. Without it, the game lags to the point of 1 frame per second with every few minutes giving me a couple seconds without lag. I've been unable to play MC since 1.7.
When I heard that Alpha (or beta?) versions of Optifine were out, I decided to give it a try. In my Minecraft launcher under my Optifine profile, I selected 'use 1.7.2', but I'm not seeing any results. I saved the Optifine.jar in the mods folder...was that correct? if not, tell me where it goes, please.
Actually, looking at it now, Optifine isn't even giving me options when in game, so obviously I've saved it in the wrong spot. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The mods folder is a Forge thing, but the beta Optifine is currently not completely compatible with Forge. Use this tutorial for modding without Forge: http://www.minecraft...e-new-launcher/
Its the old jar modding method for the new launcher.

Thank you. Do you think it's worth it to go with this method? Or should I just wait it out until the full version is released? Although..that could still be several months, right?

I think it will be very soon, its 95% done now. If the only mod you will be using is Optifine, I'd say to go with this method. It would be more lightweight without Forge if there is just one mod.

Are there any downsides to this method? What about when an updated version of Optifine is released, do I just update it in the same way, or?
If an update has less files it would be a problem, otherwise it is the same way. Maybe create a backup version to rollback to?
Went ahead and did it. Where do I save the optifine.jar? I tried saving it in my new version folder (1.7.2-Optifine), and it didn't show in game. Do I have to save it in mods?

The files inside the optifine download should be put in the 1.7.2-Optifine.jar. If you cant open jars just rename the extension to .zip, then back to .jar.

Was starting up Minecraft to see if it worked, and Minecraft decided to update to 1.7.4, which it hadn't even done the previous times I've loaded it. Since then, my new profile for Optifine will not show. I've started over several times, and the profile still will not show up.
So about updating it. When the full version is released, or an update..how do I go about updating? Just downloading the same way?
Usually updates do not have less files than the previous so you just add the new files replacing the old ones just as you did this time. If it breaks you may need to redo it.
If this process gets really annoying you might want to try Forge when optifine supports it if it runs well on your computer. But even that is in beta.
I got Optifine yesterday and all I did was download it from www.optifine.net, I found the newest version of it and downloaded and installed it then I ran Minecraft and it worked.
