I use Windows, but I'll go through the Minecraft Launcher so there shouldn't be an issue based on that.
First off, download the mods you want to use, being careful of requirements and stated incompatibilities, to your computer.
Run the Minecraft launcher and press "Edit Profile" next to the big "Play" button. On the window that opens up, press "Open Game Directory" at the bottom. A computer browser window (whatever it's called on Apple stuff) will open your Minecraft installation folder. Put the mods you want to use into a folder/directory called "mods". Either you need to make a folder called "mods" there, or run/have run Forge (or Mod Loader). Go back to the windows for the Minecraft launcher, close the "Profile Editor" window, make sure the selected profile is "Forge", and hit play.
If the game crashes or doesn't start, it's a mod issue, which I can help you through.
