I recently installed Minecraft 1.6.4 on my Son's computer. He played with it for quite a while, and then asked about getting some "mods" I did a little research, found out I needed to install Forge, and started getting mods for him. Some mods work with ZERO issues, while others will crash Minecraft on launch. Here's the weird issue I'm having. First of all, the computer is running Windows 7. The mod installation instructions often tell you to locate the .minecraft folder by searching for %appdata%.minecraft\ Did that. Now I'm supposed to find the "bin" folder, in which I will find "minecraft.jar" Here's the problem, there is NO BIN FOLDER, and NO MINECRAFT.JAR. I've done a search of the C drive, and nothing shows up anywhere. I figured there may be an issue with the original installation of Minecraft. I uninstalled it, and re-installed version 1.7.2. I can't get any of his mods to work in 1.7.2. I found out on this forum that I have to select 1.6.4 in the launch menu, run that once, then 1.7.2 will work. It works, but no mods show up at all. After installing 1.7.2 I now have a "bin" folder. The only thing in it is another folder, and in that, a folder called "temp" In that... nothing. Still no minecraft.jar anywhere. This just doesn't seem to be right at all, according to the installation tutorials I've seen. Any suggestions on where I go from here? There are some great mods that he wants, but they just won't run in our current configuration. I'd like to be running mods in the latest version also. Help is GREATLY appreciated.
I'm not totally clear on what you did to your game, though just to be certain, wipe all the contents of the .minecraft folder and re-install (just launch the game).
Your .jar file will be located in .minecraft/versions/1.7.2. The location was changed in the recent updates.
As far as some mods working and some not, there will be compatibility issues. Not all mods work together, you're probably going to have to be doing some trail and error.
Also, most of the mods out there aren't going to be updated to 1.7.2 as of now. You'll either have to wait for them to be updated or download 1.6.4 (the jar file will be found in .minecraft/versions/1.6.4).
As BouncingBall said, the new location for Minecraft.jar is in ".minecraft\versions\<whatever version you are using>". There is no bin folder anymore.

Ha! Thank you SO MUCH. That'll make a huge difference. It's been crazy frustrating, searching for something that doesn't exist. I'm all too familiar with the trial and error "mostly error" of installing mods. What a PAIN! But, anything for the kid. Thanks for the help, y'all. I truly appreciate it.Oh, also, since they have changed the location of the minecraft.jar file, is the installation the same otherwise? And where do I locate the META_INF folder that I'm supposed to delete?

Open the .jar file with 7zip or WinRAR and it's one of the first 5 things on the top.
