So is there a problem with ftb on Mac and or does it pick up viruses

the launcher does not pick up viruses.
the best way to see if it'll work is to try it

I tried it and it doesn't open. It just says cannot open because it is an unknown file

Did you download the exe or jar version? You'll need the jar i think as your on a mac
