I've recently encountered an issue where after playing Minecraft for a while it becomes extremely choppy. If I F3 it will still show my normal FPS rate (around 55-60), and my memory usage is still well within norms. Yet, it is unplayable due to the choppiness. When the symptom occurs, if I close out of Minecraft and try to close the launcher it becomes unresponsive. Checking Task Manager, it shows that Java is utilizing 90% of my CPU yet only 240 MB of memory, basically the allocated memory has been released but it's still got a stranglehold on my CPU. I believe this issue to be inherently a Java issue (though not entirely sure), and here is why:
I have Optifine installed (up to date) and have tweaked every single possible setting to render me the fastest frame rate. Whether these settings are set to give me max performance, on one end of the spectrum, or max fps on the other, the aforementioned choppiness is unaffected and just as severe. In essence, I don't believe it to be related to visual settings.
In addition, I am using a custom mod pack that I've put together for myself. Originally I believed Biomes o'Plenty to be the culprit because of all the content it added, and after removing it the issue seemed to have been stemmed. However, it just now takes an hour or two for it to start instead of 20-30 minutes as before. Therefore I do not believe any of the mods to be the main issue, though they do seem to have an effect to some degree. Also to note, whether I'm using a resource pack or not has no bearing either.
Normally I allocate 4Gb of memory to Minecraft, and my Java parameters are as such:
I've tried running the profile with half the memory and none of the arguments above, and the problem still occcurs.
Another thing I tried was going into NVIDIA Control panel and turning Vsync+triple buffering, rather than letting Minecraft manage this.
So next thing, my hardware:
Windows 8 64-bit
AMD FX-6300 3.5 Ghz CPU
GTX-660 (2GB DDR5 192-bit)
8Gb DDR3-1866
NVIDIA Drivers v331.82
Java v7_45 64-bit (I do not have a 32-bit version installed either, only the one 64-bit package; which also include any older versions of Java, they have all been removed.)
Now, I've read up on some other people having a similar problem in the past, and they all seemed to have narrowed their problem down to extremely high temps on their GPU and ended up replacing the component to solve their issue. So, using CPUID's HWManager, I've watched my temps for both the CPU, and GPU. They all remain within normal ranges: 13-28° C for the CPU and 18-30° C for GPU (the upper range being the temp when the issue occurs). As I do not have any issues with other CPU/GPU intensive processes and my temperatures are normal, I've ruled hardware failure out as a possible issue. Although, admittedly, I haven't performed a memory stress test yet to check for bad memory sectors.
Anyways, I just wanted to see if anyone else has had similar problems recently and maybe get some more ideas of what to try. I'm beginning to beat my head against the wall with this problem. I've been playing with the same setup as far as mods and hardware goes. The only change I've made since the problem began was updating to Java v7_45, so I'm leaning towards maybe Java being the problem.
Well, thanks for reading, I would appreciate any ideas.
