Is there a way to increase rendering distance beyond the default without Optifine?
Nothing against Optifine, I just find it doesn't play well with some mods and textures (flickering, etc) regardless of settings and version used. Mainly when it comes to Thaumcraft.

I've found that opening Windows Task Manager (Assuming you have Windows) and looking for the "javaw.exe" process and changing the priority to High helps a bunch. It basically allows java to use more space on your computer to run Minecraft.
Pretend real life is Minecraft. Then you see all the way to the horizon.
No, there is no way.
Thanks, that's a shame.
If only I could get optifine to work flawlessly. Right now the "corrupted" area Thaumcraft 4 creates has flickering textures, as well as ice when you are underwater, plus a few other items.I may just deal with it.
If you want to increase render distance beyond maximum in vanilla, you might be able to do this:
-Go to .Minecraft folder
-Find options.txt
-In options.txt, find "RenderDistance=(a number) or similar
-Replace the number with however many chunks you want to see out.

changing process priority does nothing of the sort.
by that thinking, setting it to 'realtime' could turn the whole of reality into minecraft!
*warning* do not set any process priority to realtime kids
even if changing process priority worked, how does that increase render distance?
