Oh, and before I get some quote of a specific line and I'm told to "read it" because that's the problem... I have ZERO coding experience. Not a word of this means anything to me.
I'm running Optifine and Rei's Minimap v3.3.06 mods with ModLoader, along with the default additions from MCPatcher: Extended HD, HD Font, Random Mobs, Custom Colors, Connected Textures, Better Glass, and Better Skies.
There is a memory leak issue within 1.5 that severely affects performance of, or even crashes Minecraft when a user tries to use a HD texture pack or switch between texture packs. This is a known bug and has been fixed in 1.6.

I had the same problem, but I fixed it . You don't have to use a lower resolution texture pack or anything; it's a problem with the .zip files. Open the Sphax .zip file with WinRar or whatever you have, and go inside assets. Click on minecraft, then mcpatcher, then ctm. After that you delete clay. Don't ask me why, just do it, I think there is a bug with clay or something that conflicts with Optifine, but I don't quite know. Hope this helped !

Retired StaffOfficial bug report here: https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-11439
Meant to respond to this earlier. Thanks, this helps a lot. Guess I'll just have to wait until I can be bothered to update my 20+ mods to 1.6 then.
