I could really use some help. I bought my son minecraft back in June so we had version 1.5.2. He wanted the newer version so I downloaded that. He had fossils and archeology mod installed in the 1.5.2 version and I was trying to download another mod that was compatible with 1.6.2 version. I put the mod in the jar file like it asked and it didn't work. When I click on the new icon for Minecraft on my desktop no mods show up. Although, when I click on the old icon for Minecraft (version 1.5.2) he still has his dinosaur mod on there.
I guess my question is am I having difficulty installing a new version mod because I didn't install it correctly (which is very possible) or is the Minecraft folders in my computer an old version? I looked in the folder "Versions" and it says 1.6.2, but I'm not sure what the problem is. Do I need to delete my old version of Minecraft? I am a complete novice when it comes to Minecraft. I have spent hours upon hours looking through forums etc. trying to figure out how to download mods and updates etc. Sorry to be a pain, but I could really use some help
ok, for starters, you need the forge installer to run and do it's thing. then, you need the 1.6.2 version of the archaeology mod, as the current version will crash minecraft with 1.6.2. so after you do that, start the launcher and click "edit profile". then under version select the forge version (should look like a jumble of numbers). then, assuming you installed the mods correctly, it should be installed. just make sure its on the forge version, else you'll lose anything from the mod.
oh, and if you have any other questions (mod related or not), feel free to ask me. I've been around for a while
Thank you Mr. Math Man. I tried to go into Edit Profile, but I don't see anything to do with a forge version. It does say version selection and under that it says: Enable experimental development versions, allow use of old beta minecraft versions, allow use of old alpha minecraft versions and under that it says use version: and then it list: release 1.6.2, release 1.6.1, release 1.5.2 etc. I don't see anything to do with forge. I also don't see any Mod button under Multiplayer on my new icon for Minecraft on my desktop. I think I have messed things up quite badly with this game and trying to download everything. Would it be in my best interest to just delete everything and start fresh? I hate that my son would lost all of his saved games though. I'm not usually so inept at doing this sort of thing, I can download most anything onto my computer, but for some reason Minecraft has me feeling like I'm a complete novice with the computer.
I downloaded the new version of Forge and copied the files within it into my minecraft.jar file folder. This worked the last time with my other version of minecraft. Did I do this wrong?
what you want to do is click the link i sent above, let it download and double click/run it. do not fiddle with the inner workings at all. once you run it (right click then clicking open/run) it should bring up the installer. run it through without modifying any options. afterwards, a new minecraft version should be available to play. play it once (just go tho the minecraft mainscreen) and close it. drag any mods you now want into the mods folder and you're set!
you need to put the fossils/archaeology mod into the mods folder, found in the same folder as the versions folder. then select the forge version and click play. if you have no forge version available, go here and download the recommended 1.6.4(or the version the mod is on, if that is different) installer (MAKE SURE IT IS INSTALLER!!!) and run it via double click or (if windows) right click and select "run". install client and keep it as the default destination (unless you defined a different path in the launcher, though that is unlikely). then select the forge version and play
p.s. sorry for the delay, school got in the way
EDIT: if there is another file in the mods folder, get rid of it. it may cause minecraft to crash
