Hey guys. I've tried 4 times now to install 2 mods; Optifine 1.6.2 and Too Many items 1.6.2. I looked up how to install mods with the new version and I followed these steps:

1. Run the Minecraft latest launcher and download v1.6.2
2. Open Start Menu and type %appdata%/.minecraft/versions and press Enter.
3. Copy/Duplicate the directory named 1.6.2 and paste as 1.6.2 Mod (you may name however you please, but everything must match) so there are now two copies.
4. Enter new/duplicated directory and also rename the Jar and Json files, make sure they match directory name. (For e.g. 1.6.1ML.jar – 1.6.1ML.json)
5. Open the Json file in your preferred text editor program and change the following: "id" from "1.6.2" to "1.6.2 Mod"

I start Minecraft up, and this is the error message I get:

Why would Minecraft need to download the .jar file if it's already on my computer?

i fixed this go into your folder which contains the .jar and .json and if you added .jar after your ml or whatever you said u put delete it...
should look like this
minecrafto
minecrafto.json

It's already like that. I'm running Windows 7, and it doesn't show the file extensions with the names, unless it's a file that it doesn't recognize. What now?

im not sure thats how i fixed it try rerunning minecraft after u do dat

I have a similar problem, when I launch 1.6.2 (using minecraft launcher 1.0.8) the launcher resets the 1.6.2.jar file to a vanilla one, removing the changes I've made. In my case removing optifine and better sprinting, and restores META-INF. I've tried setting the file as read-only, but then minecraft wont start, and I get this at the end of the error message:

same problem ;( why did 1.6 have to change so much DX

Follow the modding instructions for the OptiFine mod with whatever mod you are using, its the best set of instructions I've seen yet.
