Do I have to install and use modloader to download and use mods in minecraft? is there another program for macbook that is out there that I can install so I can install mods to my minecraft worlds? I keep getting a weird error in the code lines within the launcher that prevent it from creating a local version...

If the mod requires it, then yes, you have to. Mods are not OS-dependant, if that's what you're wondering.
