Ever since the new update with the new launcher, installing mods has been changed quite a bit, and has become, in my opinion, a lot harder. I'll try to break it down into the simplest form I can manage.
First, press Windows + r this will bring up the run search menu, in there, put in, %Appdata%\.minecraft\versions
From here select the version you would like to modify. Create a copy of the version that is currently being used. (in this case, 1.6.2), and name it how you want.
In the folder; you should see two files, and one folder, you want to rename those two files, to exactly what you named the folder. Mind you do NOT delete the file type. (.jar or .json)
You now want to open up the .json file, with a text editor. I recommend notepad++, which you can find out more about it here. The first like, there is a field called 'ID' You want to rename the contend of the field to exactly what you named the folder.
From here you want to save the file. And exit. Now open up minecraft. And create a new profile. Edit the profile, and select the version you created. Save, and log in to test everything works fine.
From here you want to exit minecraft entirely, and go back into your folder that you created. (%Appdata%\.minecraft\versions) Open up the .jar with win rar, which you can download here. Now you just drag the contents of Zan's minimap into the jar, close it, and launch the game.

Thank you for your help. I clicked on add archive to file, and it looks like the minimap file is in the jar, but it's not working. Winrar is confusing, tbh. I'm not sure how to do anything with it.

I'm wanting to install Zan's minimap, but have never installed a Minecraft mod before. I read the "installing mods on the new launcher" thread (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1830511-installing-mods-on-the-new-launcher/#entry22669637), and...there is no way I can even really follow that..do I really have to do all that just for a minimap?

Tried it again, still unable to get it.
