I gave that a try and my gtx 770 runs at a constant 1137 mhz in Minecraft rather than <600 mhz with power saving features allowed.
Ran around my world for a few minutes and declared the problem fixed (was previously crashing out within 15-30 seconds with said error message).
Tried to load Minecraft again, and crashed out within 5 seconds of loading the world. Great, apparently running for 5+ minutes was just a coincidence.
My card was running at like 40% usage when it was clocked at under 600 mhz, and that was with 16x AA and AF (using Optifine). I simply can't load the card any harder with vsync on; vsync off really isn't a viable option if I want the game to be anything close to smooth. I also feel like I'm being CPU limited, as my FPS tops out in the 200 fps range (vsync off) with low GPU usage; CPU usage is 50% (2 cores maxed) on a 4.7 ghz 2500k.
I could go use the nVidia control panel to force 32xAA, 8x SSAA, etc., but that would apply to java.exe, which obviously gets used for more than just Minecraft. Not sure how the 2 GB of vram would handle that, either; I'm pushing 800 MB usage with the default texture pack.
I'm of course assuming that the crashes are due to the power saving dynamic clock speeds and not my GPU itself being unstable. I haven't had crashes in games that actually push the 770 a bit. I also ran Furmark for about 20 minutes with a raised power limit (to try to keep at >1200 mhz) and there were no hiccups whatsoever. Card was power limited the entire time, 99% gpu usage, 73c max temp. Boost cycled between 1228 mhz and 1241 mhz.

Windows 7 SP1 fully updated
Minecraft 1.6.2 with Optifine through MagicLauncher
Java 64 bit fully updated
Hopefully covered everything relevant here. Does anybody know of a solution? Minecraft is completely unplayable for me at the moment. My old GTX470 would deafen me while struggling to maintain 60 fps vsync, but at least the game ran:|

So apparently nVidia cards will crash out in Minecraft with the above error message if they're not loaded enough.

The supposed solution is to disable power management for the offending application, which would be java.exe in this case.
