I have a question for editing configuration files, please.

I have been using wordpad for editing .cfg files but I've just downloaded Notepad++ tonight so I'll be using that from now on.

I also use JEdit for the .conf files but that's not really related to my question.

A friend sent me some config settings in a private message that didn't include the indent at the start of each line. This meant that when I tried to copy/paste it into my config file, it ended up looking like this

Feel free to giggle at my fail there - but u get the idea ..I hope.

For the moment, using Notepad++, I've selected the relevant lines and then used the "increase indent" function that I found under "Edit" in the menu (think that's where I found it)

I just want to know if that's right/wrong, am I breaking something by doing it that way? Is there a better way? Is there a link to some info that I can read on how to do this properly?

Edit: Seems I may have posted this in the wrong place, sorry. If a mod wants to move it to where it belongs, that'd be great, although it might be helpful to have a good FAQ dedicated to editing configuration files put up in it's place.
