Hello fellow crafters i have been having trouble recently, let me explain. EVERY TIME I TRY TO INSTALL OPTIFINE 1.5.2 (8 TIMES NOW) I DELETE META-INF AND DRAG OPTIFINE IN. now your thinking what's the problem. THE PROBLEM IS EVERY TIME I CLOSE THE WINRAR AFTER PUTTING OPTIFINE IN AND PLAY MINECRAFT THE EXTRA SETTINGS AREN'T THERE. SO I GO BACK IN MINECRAFT.JAR AND CHECK, AND META-INF IS STILL FREAKING THERE, AND MY OPTFINE FILES HAVE PLAYED NOW YOU SEE ME NOW YOU DON'T. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM. sincerly,Me.
Well there is one workaround.
The Magiclauncher allows you to install mods directly from the launcher and does not require manually modifying the .jar.
That doesn't help if you don't want to use another launcher, but it's an option.
As for the .jar, it might be set to Read only. Right click and properties.
Or extract everything, copy mod files, delete meta-inf and re-pack it into the jar?
Either that, or you could use Linux. Default archive manager supports virtually any archived file type under the sun (zip, jar, rar, 7z, tar.gz, you name it. Its got it.)

I'm sorry for saying it but that's a lot of trouble just to write to a .jar...
I know Linux enthusiasts are all about having as much control over you computer as possible, but this is honestly overkill, especially advicing him to install an operating system that is definitely not new-user friendly just in order to play Minecraft.
I love Linux but it's not the way to go just to play this one game.
Sure, agreed. I just feel he could test if the .jar was by chance read only before going through those steps.
I was more refering to the installing Linux comment.
No offense intended.
