I believe this was happening in other versions of Minecraft. It's known as a chunk error. I'm not aware if there is any way to fix it but may be just try to build around it
maybe this was created by the mods? some mod problems
Maybe but I believe it was a chunk error that occurred. A chunk error is a error which involves a glitch in the terrain making it look weird. Try reloading. It may fix the chunk error.
I had this happen to my world after my game crashed while I was playing it. It's caused by two or more chunks whose positions have been miscalculated. You can go into MCedit and delete them (because there probably is more than the one you found) or you can go into the .mcr file and swap the two chunks back to their original locations. Editing the files is very tedious work, but results in less loss of data than the MCedit route.
it's a big-ass hole straight to the void.
does anyone have any idea what this is? is it common? and how to fix it ?
Can't build around it either
Like your getting from your research, try relogging. It normally fixes the chunk error issue for me.

2. Place a sign in the middle that says "Don't dig straight down"

That's how you'll have to fix it. Go to MCEdit and delete it.
