I'm pretty sure this belongs in the vanilla support category, but correct me if I'm wrong. I have been doing a lot of NBT editing in mine craft, just trying to know how everything works, without a problem. Until I started working with potion effects. It started when I was trying to make a spawner that spawned zombies with speed, and the spawner was there not being buggy, but then the zombie spawned, and I saw it spawn, but then my game froze. It just stayed there for a bit, and then I got a minecraft has crashed screen. I tried to get into the world, but it just gave me the same crash report. So I tested it out a bit, and gave an already existing zombie a potion effect, and it still crashed. I tried all different kind of potion effects, levels, and durations, but it crashed every time. So then I tried just throwing a splash potion at a zombie, every fine of course, and I tried editing the effect, worked perfectly. Tried adding new effects to it, worked perfectly. But that doesn't help me, as I am trying to work towards building an adventure map. When minecraft crashed, it said the problem was a ticking entity, not quite sure what that means. Obviously the ticking entity was the zombie with the potion effect. I know I said this was a vanilla problem, but I did have an in-game NBTedit mod installed, but I tried adding the potion effects externally as well and it still crashed. I doubt it affected it at all, but I did have minecraft forge and too many items installed as well. My operating system is a Mac OSX 10.7.3 on a MacBook Pro, running minecraft version 1.4.7. Here is the crash report that got saved.

Hm... I got a similar thing on 1.5 (Also Mac, 10.7.5) but it didn't persist. Just crashed Minecraft once and worked once I opened it up again. I think the error is that it's either processing an entity too many times per tick or cannot process it within a tick. Anyways, let me check a few things. You have Ambient at 0, Duration is positive, but not greater than 32767 and Amplifier is positive and not greater than 255. And you have those tags under a Compound Tag, correct? Not straight under ActiveEffects? If so... I dunno. You could always use a 3rd part editor that automates it for you like MCEdit (Need a filter for MCEdit).

Well almost everything you said seems right, but I put the duration higher that 32767, because the nbt format says to use an integer there, so I don't think that should be a problem, but it still crashes no matter how show I put it, so I have no idea...
I will try it now that it is 1.5.1 and see if it works.
