Open your minecraft(_server).jar, open the universal zip, and drop the contents of the zip into minecraft.jar. Make sure you delete the META-INF folder in the minecraft.jar (DO NOT DO THIS ON SERVER) or your game will freeze at the "done loading" screen.*
If using a mod manager, place the forge zip under the jarmods section.
For everyone who still has problems, I have the fix! [1.4.4] The first thing you have to do, is go the the Minecraft Forge website. Then, go to the "Releases" section. The first download should be the latest, so click that. When you're there, you want to scroll down a bit. You should see a blue box reading, "Downloads Adfly", or, "Downloads Direct". Below either one, there's two download links. One is, recommended, the other is the latest. Then, you want to do the latest, and click, "universal". By then, you will either be at the downloads page on "Adfly",
or have a direct download. Then, you want to make sure you have WinRar, or 7zip. Then, you want to unpack your download, and open
your Minecraft.jar, delete, META.INF. Once you have done that, drag your forge files into the minecraft.jar, and... Tada! You just need to
run minecraft, and hopefully, it works. Thank you! I hope this helped!
This doesn't work... it just crashed my minecraft after logging in. The new update made something go wrong. It's not modloader, because minecraft runs fine just with modloader and without armor status and status effect. As soon as I install armorstatus and status effecet, I crash after logging in.
I had the same problem... The first thing do NOT put mods inside minecraft.jar first. (delete META-INF folder). You must put minecraft forge first (dont delete META-INF that is from forge), than run Minecraft it shouldnt be black screen. than exit minecraft , now you can put what mod you want into minecraft.jar and it shouldnt be black screen. Hope this helps. I was trying everything to get off that black screen. So i reinstaled minecraft and did all that.

I know its been a few years but if you are still looking to fix this, just delete java, forge and the .minecraft file. Redownload all of them and launch and it should be fixed.
